Qatar Energy has unveiled its ambitious plans for a new LNG expansion project, the “North Field West” project, set to propel the State of Qatar's LNG production capacity to new heights. H.E. Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs and the President and CEO of Qatar Energy, made the announcement during a press conference held at Qatar Energy’s Headquarters in Doha, marking a significant milestone in the country's energy sector.
The “North Field West” project aims to further enhance Qatar's position as a global leader in LNG production, with a targeted capacity increase to 142 million tons per annum (MTPA) by the end of this decade. This represents a remarkable 85% surge from current production levels and underscores Qatar's commitment to meeting growing global energy demands.
Extensive appraisal drilling and testing have confirmed the presence of productive layers in Qatar’s giant North Field extending towards the west, paving the way for the development of the new LNG production project in Ras Laffan. Minister Al-Kaabi emphasized the strategic importance of this discovery, stating, “These great efforts have confirmed the extension of the North Field’s productive layers further towards the west, enabling us to produce significant additional quantities of gas from this new sector.”
Additionally, Minister Al-Kaabi revealed the discovery of substantial additional gas quantities in the North Field, estimated at 240 trillion cubic feet. This discovery elevates Qatar’s gas reserves to more than 2,000 trillion cubic feet, with condensates reserves surpassing 80 billion barrels. The project also promises large quantities of liquefied petroleum gas, ethane, and helium, further solidifying Qatar's position as a key player in the global energy market.
With the commencement of the “North Field West” project, Qatar's total LNG production is expected to reach approximately 142 MTPA, signalling a significant leap in the country's hydrocarbon production to over 7.25 million barrels of oil equivalent per day.
Minister Al-Kaabi underscored Qatar Energy’s commitment to the project's success, stating, “We will immediately commence the basic engineering works necessary to ensure that the planned progress is achieved according to the approved schedule for this new project, which will be called the North Field West project.”
Furthermore, Minister Al-Kaabi expressed gratitude to the dedicated professionals at Qatar Energy and the energy sector in Qatar for their tireless efforts and dedication. He also extended sincere thanks to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar, for his wise leadership and unwavering support of the energy sector.
Qatar Energy remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing the North Field production expansion projects, including the North Field East project and the North Field South project, underscoring its pivotal role in driving Qatar's energy sector to new heights of success.
This landmark announcement heralds a
new era of growth and prosperity for Qatar Energy and the State of Qatar,
positioning the country as a cornerstone of global energy leadership and
innovation.
